Baoshan Sanren as Chief Cultivator

What if a neutral outside party, Baoshan Sanren, became Chief Cultivator after Wen Ruohan's fall from power instead?

Rather than Jin Guangshan, it would be interesting for a neutral, outside party take up the role of Chief Cultivator after the war.  Suspicion is high on all fronts and many Sects are recovering... resources are depleted, buildings need to be rebuilt, many lives were lost and need to be put to rest.  The fact that the Jins came out with the least damage is something recognized and resented by all.  People in cultivation society fear another dictator or warmonger and yet they need a break to recoup internally rather than worrying about inter-Sect politics.

So, it is proposed to find someone who was outside the conflict to help manage the shift as Sects recover and need guidance.  It would be a temporary position to maintain the peace, but could be considered longer if needed (to be determined later).  A few names are put forward, certain people jockeying for power, before someone says - "We might as well go to the Immortal herself at this point!"  Silence.  "Well, why not?"

In terms of contacting her, Xiao Xingchen is able to send her a message which she responds to.  She descends and meets with the Sect Leaders.  Xingchen brings her up to speed, since he is also an outside party and thus she is not influenced by Sect Leaders (Jin Guangshan) who try to look best in her eyes.

This is when Baoshan Sanren learns of Cangse Sanren's passing and her surviving son.  At this time, Wei Wuxian is isolated, highly depressed, and just not sure where to go next in life.  He feels used by Jiang Cheng, uncertain of his place in society now, and yearns for Lan Zhan (who he continues to have misconceptions with).  Baoshan Sanren feels he needs some space and uncomplicated life for a while - she sends him back to her mountain with Xingchen and Song Lan.

Wei Wuxian is not seen for some time - time skip a few months or years.  In this time, we see Baoshan Sanren working to sort out Sect politics and establish administration pathways for help the Sects recover while curbing the Jins.  Because Wei Wuxian is completely inaccessible and not heard from by anyone, the Jins are not able to make any progress in copying his techniques.  Xue Yang is dealt with directly by Baoshan Sanren.

Lan Zhan yearns for Wei Wuxian while he is away and periodically asks for an update on his health from Baoshan Sanren privately.  She observes that he truly cares and perhaps gives him leave to visit Wei Wuxian on her mountain, where we find Wei Wuxian in meditation - cleansed of the dark energy and working on building a new golden core from scratch.  He has re-found his love of life in the peace of Baoshan Sanren's mountain.  He has no wish to leave, but is willing to exchange letters with Lan Zhan.  In this way, years pass.  Wei Wuxian is removed from the drama and not a political tool.

Ultimately, I want a happy end for WangXian!  Also, a comeuppance to some of the Sects who have been so embroiled with their political games for years that they have lost sight of their inherent principles.  The Jins have become greedy for power.  The Jiangs have lost their compassion.  The Lans have become too rigid in their rules.  The Wens - the Dafen Mountain Wens are the only ones remaining - are so weakened that they need to start over.  The minor Sects are jockeying for power and not yielding many strong cultivators anymore.  What has the world come to?  Baoshan Sanren will help level the playing field and reset the cultivation world on a better path.
